Pieter-Steph du Toit was as surprised as most members of the gallery at the Gallagher Estate, Midrand, when he was named SA Rugby player of the year on Monday.It was not that the Stormers lock had a bad season, by no means, but, ironically in a tough year for South African rugby, there were strong candidates vying for the coveted title.Warren Whiteley, Ruan Combrinck and Du Toit’s lock partner Eben Etzebeth were desperately unlucky to leave empty-handed.But on a night when the Golden Lions Rugby Union almost swept the boards, Du Toit won the biggest award.
