Chad le Clos shakes off Rio blues with a gold at world champs
Montreal — Chad le Clos shook off Rio disappointment with a victory in the 200m butterfly as the Short Course Swimming World Championships began in Windsor, Canada. Le Clos was denied an Olympic title repeat in the 200m fly by US great Michael Phelps. But he put in a storming finish on Tuesday to repeat as short-course world champion in 1 minute and 48.76 seconds — the third-fastest performance ever in a 25m pool. Hungarian treble Olympic gold medalist Katinka Hosszu, seeking to add an exclamation point to her sparkling Olympic year, captured gold in the 400m individual medley and silver in the 200m freestyle. Her medley time of 4:21.67 was more than two seconds off her own world record, but it was comfortably in front of runner-up Ella Eastin’s 4:27.74.
