Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan came under attack from the KwaZulu-Natal ANC Youth League less than two hours before delivering one of the most crucial budget speeches in years. The league accused Gordhan of conflict of interest, and of selling the nation to foreign interests and hostile local forces. On Wednesday Thanduxolo Sabelo, the youth league’s provincial secretary, was addressing the media before a Friday-to-Sunday elective conference where he is expected to contest the position of provincial chairperson, told journalists that they were concerned about issues surrounding Gordhan and the Treasury. He asked President Jacob Zuma to intervene immediately to avoid "the capture of Treasury by white monopoly capital".
