The ANC’s provincial executive committee (PEC) in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday announced the disbanding of the party’s leadership in Emalahleni region, which is closely associated with former provincial premier Senzo Mchunu. The move was interpreted by some as a backlash against those who had supported him. Mchunu lost the premiership in May, six months after he was defeated by Sihle Zikalala in the battle for the ANC chairmanship in the province, at an elective conference held in Pietermaritzburg in November 2015. Emalahleni region supported Mchunu ahead of the controversial conference that has since been challenged in court.
