It was good to hear that black entrepreneurs are part of Gauteng Premier David Makhura’s plans for radical change in the province — SA’s unemployment rate is a ticking time bomb. Stats SA employment figures for 2016 revealed that 27.1% of the population is without a job, the highest in 13 years. Delivering his state of the province address, Makhura said R40bn of the Gauteng government’s R46bn procurement budget for medium-term expenditure will be available to empower black youth and women entrepreneurs, especially those in the townships. It is great news knowing that something is being done. With a lot of challenges facing young aspiring entrepreneurs, lack of funding being one of them, the government’s intervention couldn’t have come at a better time.
