SA’s scrappy politics often presents a low bar, but even by those standards, I think the past seven days represented President Jacob Zuma’s worst week in politics so far. The interesting thing about the president’s difficulties was their sheer variety, ranging from the national to the trivial. We have got used to Zuma fumbling whenever he is not reading from a set speech. For example, answering questions in Parliament in September, he was asked to name the projects that form part of his nine-point plan for an economic turnaround. Zuma sidestepped the question, saying it had been discussed often. "One of them is agriculture. There are many," he said.But that little memory lapse paled into insignificance compared to the faux pas in last week’s appearance; he came armed, and carefully named the nine points, but from there things went south.
