A few minutes after Thuli Madonsela’s State of Capture report was released on Wednesday afternoon, copies would have popped up in a string of e-mail accounts at the headquarters of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Langley, Virginia. The report would have been pounced on by staff in the CIA’s directorate of analysis. The Americans are profoundly interested in SA, particularly as the Zuma administration pivots from the West to the East, and particularly towards Russia and China. Long gone are the days when a US president could visit SA and pronounce the occupant of the Union Buildings as "our point man in Africa", as George W Bush once did of Thabo Mbeki.
