A photograph of Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt posing with a Mamelodi Sundowns shirt left rival fans gasping for air when it first appeared two weeks ago. The envious fans couldn’t fathom how Sundowns managed to pull off such a marketing coup and some went as far as ridiculing it on social media‚ insisting that the image was photoshopped. Irate club spokesman Thulani Thuswa flew in like a featherweight and confirmed to this columnist that the photo was real. He also revealed Bolt’s picture should have been accompanied by a glamour image of pop star Rihanna also posing with the Sundowns jersey. But conflicting schedules made it impossible to pin down the pop star. The opportunities were made possible by sports gear company Puma, which sponsors Sundowns, Rihanna and Bolt, among others. Downs signed a long-term deal with Puma in July and it seems to have opened up a world of untold possibilities for the club.
