The first mining charter, signed by stakeholders on October 11 2002, and the first revised version published in 2010, were the products of intense, rigorous and thorough negotiation. On each occasion the government, the department of mineral resources and of trade and industry, representative unions, community stakeholders, the South African Mining Development Association and the Chamber of Mines were locked in serious meetings in which ideas were debated on how to transform the mining sector in a manner that was sustainable and viable and would unlock the economic and transformational potential of the industry and SA’s people. These intense meetings produced a mining charter in 2002 that all stakeholders could be proud of, even though compromises were reached in a number of areas.
