Parliament’s ad hoc committee looking into the crisis at the SABC has resolved to issue summons to compel embattled board chairperson Mbulaheni Maguvhe to appear before an inquiry into the public broadcaster. Maguvhe, the last remaining nonexecutive member of the SABC board, was scheduled to appear before the committee at 4pm on Thursday, but he did not show up. Maguvhe, his legal team and SABC executives, including acting CEO James Aguma and corporate executive Hlaudi Motsoeneng, walked out of the inquiry on Wednesday. Maguvhe has accused the committee of discrimination, saying its members refused to provide documents in Braille. Committee chairperson Vincent Smith said that the committee had two options: to proceed with the inquiry or to issue summons for Maguvhe in his capacity as the chairperson of the SABC board and to force the public broadcaster to provide documents that are still outstanding.
