The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) on Sunday threatened to strike over Eskom’s failure to consult with the trade union over plans to shut down five power stations. Eskom announced this week the Hendrina‚ Kriel‚ Komati‚ Grootvlei and Camden power stations would be closed. At least 6‚000 jobs are  on the line, and Numsa wants to go on record saying that no consultation has taken place between Eskom’s board and trade unions. "Furthermore, as Numsa we are convinced that the lack of consultation demonstrates that there is an attempt to hide the real reasons for this drastic course of action‚" said general secretary Irvin Jim. He said Eskom was well aware that if it planned to cut jobs or retrench workers it had to deliver a section 189 notice for proper retrenchment processes to take place‚ which had not happened.
