Joburg mayor accuses ANC of violence at the city council on Thursday
Johannebsurg mayor Herman Mashaba has accused the ANC of being behind the violence outside the city council on Thursday because it wanted to stop the adoption of the city’s adjustment budget. Mashaba said he would be laying criminal charges at the Johannesburg central police station. A group calling themselves the Joburg Social Movement (JSM) protested outside the city council on Thursday, where things reportedly turned violent. News24 reported that protesters broke laptops and windows as well as lit fires outside the council building. "The blame must be put squarely at the feet of the ANC who assisted the protesters in storming the council chamber and threatened the lives of councillors and city employees alike," Mashaba said in a statement. "Today’s march was led by the JSM, an organisation set up by ANC members to discredit the new administration."
