AS PROTESTS at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) came to a head with news on Monday that a worker at the university had died, students said they would reflect on the methods they used to protest, and the university said it would hold a poll to determine whether to resume academic activities next week. Advocate Dali Mpofu, meanwhile, said it was news to him that he would be representing the #feesmustfall movement in a Constitutional Court bid to force the government to provide free university education across SA. A poll later this week would gauge "the thoughts of staff and students on the resumption of the academic programme on Monday‚ if the appropriate security measures are in place", Wits spokeswoman Shirona Patel said. "If the majority of students and staff support the reopening on Monday‚ the university will call upon government and the police to meet their obligations to protect the university’s property and to safeguard the lives of all students and staff."
