Eskom’s push for nuclear power has received a boost following the release of a study by professional service firm KPMG detailing the economic contribution made by the Koeberg power plant in the Western Cape. The plant, which is Africa’s only nuclear station, contributed R29bn to the economy of the Western Cape and R23bn to SA’s GDP from 2013 to 2016, according to the KPMG study released on Thursday. Koeberg has an installed capacity of 1,860MW, which provides 50% of the Western Cape’s and about 5.6% of SA’s energy needs. Eskom says Koeberg is one of its most reliable and cheapest plants to run. The KPMG study was commissioned by Eskom amid growing criticism of its push for nuclear energy.
