Constitutional Court lays blame for social grants fiasco at Dlamini’s feet
The court gives Bathabile Dlamini until the end of the month to motivate why she should not be held personally responsible for the costs of the matter
Calls for the dismissal of Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini are mounting, following the Constitutional Court judgment on the social grants saga. The court was scathing in its assessment of her, laying the blame for the fiasco squarely at her feet. Opposition parties called again for her dismissal, and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu added his voice to the growing chorus of disapproval. "Her arrogance in this entire situation is breathtaking," he said on Friday in a statement welcoming the court’s decision. "SA owes a debt of gratitude to the independence of the judiciary in general and in particular to its esteemed Constitutional Court." Tutu was pleased that three-monthly reports to the court were required: "It means that someone with an understanding of good governance will be watching her and Sassa like hawks."
