Embattled KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head Maj-Gen Johan Booysen has taken early retirement after reaching a settlement with the South African Police Service (SAPS). Booysen had been in a protracted legal battle with the SAPS after he was suspended. He said he was sidelined after his investigation into politically connected businessman Thoshan Panday‚ who had been allegedly shielded by now-suspended provincial police commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni. He has also accused the top echelon of the National Presecuting Service of "having blood on their hands". Panday and his web of companies had secured millions of rand in police procurement contracts‚ which were the focus of an investigation, as well as his links to top police officials. Booysen on Tuesday confirmed he had reached a settlement with police management and would bow out‚ several months before his scheduled retirement in July. But he would not comment further.
