On Tuesday, the Gauteng legislature will debate a motion of no confidence in premier David Makhura. The motion was tabled by the DA following the deaths of more than 100 psychiatric patients who were moved from Life Esidimeni to unlicensed nongovernmental organisations (NGOs). "This comes as the premier repeatedly denies that he was made aware of the transfer of psychiatric patients to unregistered NGOS," the DA said on Monday. "However, evidence shows that his office was made aware and [was] advised months before the transferring of patients took place." During his state of the province address last week, Makhura said the decision to move the patients was not made in consultation with the provincial executive council, which he heads. "The executive council and I would never have approved a plan to outsource mental health[care], a primary responsibility of the state…. We would never have supported the decision to outsource this to NGOs, whether they would have been licensed or not,"...
