Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa urged councillors all over the country on Tuesday to work hard to provide municipal services. Speaking at the SA Local Government Association (Salga) Conference in Sandton on Tuesday‚ Ramaphosa said municipalities were the level of government closest to people‚ their challenges and their dreams. Local government could only be said to be working for the people when citizens enjoyed basic services. "They [citizens] will know this when they see remote villages electrified‚ street tarred‚ homes connected to running water. They will know that local government is working for them when their children are fed and have access to early child development‚" Ramaphosa said. "We must root our unity in the determination to serve the interests of our people, the poor, the vulnerable and the marginalised above all else." He urged councillors to be ethical and trustworthy.
