The City of Johannesburg is considering dissolving the boards of municipal-owned entities and absorbing them back into the city’s structures. The issue of the municipal-owned entities, such as Pikitup and Johannesburg Water, was discussed at the City of Johannesburg’s four-day mayoral lekgotla last week. The entities have been a headache for the city, with some being accused of mismanagement and corruption. Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba threatened to dismantle embattled waste management company Pikitup into seven pieces before privatising it. He later backtracked on the statement after opposition from the unions. "We haven’t really broken it [the news] yet, but we are looking at absorbing the entities back into the city, and that would mean absorbing the boards," said the city’s communications head, Tony Taverna-Turisan.
