The Johannesburg city council has approved the appointment of Dr Ndivhoniswani Lukhwareni as its new manager following a tumultuous day in chambers. Lukhwareni, currently the deputy manager for the City of Tshwane, is expected to take up his new position in January. The DA’s chief whip in the Gauteng legislature, Mike Moriarty, was seen as a frontrunner for the position but he fell out of the running. Lukhwareni will take over from Trevor Fowler. Earlier on Thursday the city’s council meeting stalled when ANC chief whip Solomon Mogase commented about the EFF being married to the DA after the local elections in August. "The EFF … exists in its own right," said an EFF councillor who asked speaker Vasco da Gama to order the ANC to withdraw the comment. Da Gama struggled to hold the meeting together after Mogase and ANC councillor Matshidiso Mfikoe refused to leave when Da Gama ordered them out of the council.
