South African futures were marginally higher on Thursday after the JSE closed lower as platinum and gold stocks retreated in subdued trade. Volumes were low, with R11.9bn traded at the JSE’s close. The JSE all share closed 0.13% off at 52,028 and the blue-chip top 40 softened 0.02%. Platinums shed 2.8% and the gold index closed 2.48% lower. Food and drug retailers shed 0.56%, and resources were down 0.38%. General retailers added 0.22% and banks gained 0.14%. The Dow Jones industrial average gained traction in early evening trade after a slow start, with the Dow up 0.36% to 20,736.85. Brent crude remained under pressure, losing 0.37% to $50.52 a barrel. At 5.45pm, the local near-dated top-40 Alsi futures index was 0.12% higher at 45,391. The number of contracts traded was 19,190 from Wednesday’s 33,432.
