If a teacher was writing a report on my result in the Volkswagen SA Media Challenge at the weekend, they would have said: "Could have done better." Perhaps I am being a bit harsh on myself, but in the final corners of the final lap at Kyalami, I lost a podium place and finished fourth. Still, it could have been worse and what an opportunity the challenge presented. Eight cars arrived at the superb new circuit facility, set to be driven in two races by both members of the motoring media and a group of celebrities as part of a national race day at Kyalami which saw about 450 entries. Each car in the challenge was an identical VW Polo 1.2l TSI BlueMotion, equipped with a dual clutch automatic gearbox — with paddles. Qualifying on the Saturday saw the eight members of the media getting to grips with the car.
