Deputy Minister of Public Works Jeremy Cronin spoke to Business Day TV's News Leader about the government’s Expanded Works Programme and whether job opportunities could translate into employment. "We view the programme as being not an easy route to solving the unemployment crisis, but dealing with the crisis and answering some degree of income support to households that have very little by way of income support," he said. Cronin said the programme was not a silver bullet to solving the unemployment crisis in the country but was rather to give work experience to individuals who had no skills and likelihood of employment. He said the programme helped many of the participants to secure informal and in some instances formal sector employment. • News Leader airs daily on Business Day TV channel 412
