Olympic star Nino Schurter vies with Epic kings
Reigning Olympic gold medallist Nino Schurter and five-time winners Christoph Sauser and Karl Platt will turn up on Sunday for the start of the eight-day Cape Epic among what has been called "probably the most competitive field yet". The 691km route in 2017 takes riders from a prologue in Durbanville to stages in Hermanus, Greyton, Elgin and the finish near Franschhoek on March 26. The strong climbers will relish the 15,400m of vertical gain over that distance. At least seven men’s teams have set their sights on the top step of the podium, with Sauser of Switzerland and Investec Songo Specialized partner Jaroslav Kulhavy of the Czech Republic, himself a former Olympic gold medallist, probably the favourites in most people’s books. Sauser has been in excellent form in warm-up races despite a brief retirement in 2016 and the powerful Kulhavy is always a formidable competitor.
