The University of the Free State (UFS) has chosen an engineer with a track record of leadership in both academia and industry to succeed Jonathan Jansen as vice-chancellor and rector. Prof Francis Petersen will move from the University of Cape Town, where he is the deputy vice-chancellor in charge of institutional innovation, and where he previously held the post of dean of engineering and the built environment. In his application he emphasised the importance of the broader South African and African context in charting a course for the university.
