Struggle stalwart Ahmed Kathrada’s health has deteriorated, his foundation announced on Monday. Kathrada is one of three surviving Rivonia trialists, with the others being Andrew Mlangeni and Denis Goldberg. The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Foundation are holding a prayer session for the stalwart in Houghton at the Mandela Foundation’s offices on Tuesday morning, at which they will give an update on Kathrada’s health. Kathrada, fondly known as “Uncle Kathy”, is among the first generation of parliamentarians to get sworn into SA’s first democratic Parliament. Foundation CEO Neeshan Balton said Kathrada was experiencing complications after undergoing an operation and was in a serious condition. “Kathrada has contracted pneumonia, which has affected both his lungs. Despite appropriate medical care, his condition is deteriorating.
