Shops, allegedly foreign-owned, were looted in Jeppestown, Johannesburg, on Sunday night, in possible xenophobic violence, the city’s member of the mayoral committee for safety, Michael Sun, said. "The Johannesburg metro police department is on high alert and is working closely with the SAPS (South African Police Service) in containing any possible xenophobic attacks or related crime, and we have metro police officers on the ground feeding information back to the nerve centre, ready to deploy officers 24 hours a day," Sun said on Monday. He said the city, as part of the Gauteng provincial joint operation centre, was also working with SAPS and other law-enforcement agencies to develop strategies and action plans to deal with xenophobic situations.
