DA leader Mmusi Maimane laid criminal charges against the Hawks, the police, the National Prosecuting Authority and various ministers over their involvement in SA’s failure to arrest Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir during his last visit to SA in 2015. The charges follow the North Gauteng High Court’s ruling on Wednesday that the government’s decision to withdraw SA from the International Criminal Court and the Rome Statute was invalid and should be revoked. The Rome Statute compelled SA to arrest Bashir during his visit to face charges of war crimes related to the conflict in South Sudan. However, the government did not effect an arrest and Bashir was given clear passage to leave SA.
