A total of 136 people have been arrested amid the violence in Tshwane in the past 24 hours, acting national police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane said on Friday. The situation in the capital had calmed down after an anti-illegal immigrant protest turned violent on Friday morning, he said. However, the commissioner claimed that the situation, which had seen violent protests spill over from surrounding townships into the CBD, may have been over-exaggerated. He cautioned people about the spread of “fake news”, hoax messages and videos which were being circulated on social media. “All must take responsibility for safety in SA and refrain from being part of the problem by spreading false messages and promoting panic,” Phahlane said. “The situation may be exaggerated by some for their own gain.”
