Non-compliance with Parliament’s guidelines on declaration of members’ interest came under the spotlight on Tuesday when it emerged 14 MPs had declared their interests late without providing reasons. Parliament’s joint committee on ethics and members’ interests made the announcement at a meeting on Tuesday. The committee resolved to investigate and has given those affected until the end of this week to explain themselves. The closely watched declaration of members’ interests is a mechanism to ensure MPs conduct their work in the interests of voters and not for themselves or private benefactors. It has also been the source of mudslinging between political parties over the perceived failure to declare shares, gifts or other benefits as party members.
