Violence broke out in the villages of Moretele municipality over water at the weekend and a youngster was shot dead. Three houses belonging to politicians‚ including that of MEC for economic development Sello Lehari‚ have been torched. The supply of running water has been a issue for some time for the communities near Hammanskraal‚ in the North West‚ with the municipality admitting last year that it could not meet about 25% of demand. Moretele is also one of several municipalities that owe Tshwane millions of rand for water and have been cut off due to a lack of payment. The latest dispute arose when arrangements for a planned meeting in Tshwane between officials and residents did not materialise as promised. Enraged‚ the residents blocked roads. Security guards were accused of shooting a resident dead during the fracas. Residents then went on rampage‚ burning down the houses. This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available. TMG Digital/TimesLIVE...
