No more means testing for students receiving social grants
NSFAS has removed a hurdle for matrics who are accepted to study at an institution of higher learning
Matric students receiving a social grant who are accepted to study at a tertiary institution will qualify for NSFAS funding without having to undergo a means test, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme has announced. "This decision comes after extensive work between NSFAS and government departments to make sure that there is a smooth process for social grant beneficiaries‚" NSFAS project manager Xolani Gobela said at a social development youth camp in Kimberley on Thursday. A statement said that 188,687 learners who sat for matric examinations in 2016 were recipients of a social grant: 173,085 a child support grant‚ 14,926 a foster child grant and 676 a disability grant. It is estimated that 56,958 of social grant recipients are attending quintile 4 and 5 schools. TMG Digital
