South African futures were higher on Tuesday on a firmer opening on the Dow Jones and as miners on the JSE benefited from the weaker rand. Sentiment on the JSE was dominated by rumours about the future of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan following his recall by President Jacob Zuma from an international investor roadshow on Monday. Gordhan said he "was still finance minister," allaying some concern about his future. The all share closed 1.13% higher at 52,309.20 and the blue-chip top 40 rose 1.24%. Platinums were up 3.06% and resources rose 2.45%. Industrials added 1.09%. General retailers dropped 1.59% and the gold index retreated 1.07%. Sasol closed 5.89% higher at R382.21 and Naspers gained 3.11% to R2,305.49. The Dow Jones was 0.38% up in early evening trade with Brent crude jumping 1.69% to $51.65 a barrel.
