The JSE opened marginally firmer on Tuesday despite a softer close on the Dow and weaker Asian markets. The Dow closed 0.10% lower at 20,881.48 points on Monday. The Nikkei 225 lost 0.12% and the Hang Seng shed 0.13%. Food and drug retailers were early favourites on the day, with banks and financials also trading positively. Resources and platinums took a breather after a strong performance on Monday. Platinum was flat at $936.41/oz, with gold trending weaker at $1,201.08. Brent oil was 0.23% softer at $51.26 a barrel. Trading volumes were thin as the market awaited Wednesday’s interest rate decision in the US. The Federal open market committee begin its two-day meeting on Tuesday. "They are expected to hike interest rates but all ears would be on clues with regards to the interest rate profile over the next couple of months," Nedbank Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) analysts said.
